Now, travelers flying from the US to Hawaii are no longer required to show proof of vaccination in order to be able to enter. Hawaii’s much maligned Safe Travels system came to an end over the weekend, and with it came the end of the state’s pandemic-related entry restrictions. Low figures, coupled with high vaccine uptake, has led Hawaii to be in a position to finally ease its Covid-19 related restrictions. The state has a seven day average of just 103 daily cases – far below the almost 5,000 daily cases reported at the start of the year – and has recorded just 19 deaths over the last two weeks. The long-awaited change in the state’s approach to its Covid-19 restrictions and entry requirements comes following a severe reduction in the number of Covid-19 related hospitalizations and deaths, in keeping with trends throughout the country. Thankfully for American travelers, those heading to the Aloha State from here on out will be able to benefit from the removal of all restrictions and a much more streamlined way to enter. The state had long since lagged behind those on the mainland, with strict Covid-19 rules enforced until quite recently and the mask mandate previously having shown no signs of being lifted. Hawaii has now officially ended all of its remaining Covid-19 restrictions, including the islands’ mask mandate. ![]() I suggest that you create a new one, as images are going to be uploaded into generated folders that won't make much sense to users. You might even leave with an interesting new idea. Happy Bones provides a setting where one can retract for a moment and emerge with more solid footing than when they entered. The caffeinated beverage serves as a vehicle, physical stimulation certainly, but also something over which you can ponder your thoughts, find respite from the outside world, or engage in conversation. Instead, it is a coffee house in the more traditional sense. There isn’t the distraction of entertainment over the air, food, or a high concept. Local art adorns the walls, much of it created by one of the co-owners, creating a personal but relaxed environment. Stylish and contemporary, but not overwrought. What then is the attraction of Happy Bones? It is the space itself. Not spectacular however, plus no seltzer or demitasse spoon. Lots of interesting aromas, nice full texture, savory. Even the coffee, good without doubt, isn’t necessarily the main focus while the baristas are talented and the equipment top notch, the beans are sourced from the fairly common (by third wave standards) Counter Culture and there is little variety in the offerings. It’s not a place to take your lap top and bundle up in, even if it had WiFi (which I doubt). You won’t find your ubiquitous avocado toasts and poached eggs here (undoubtedly delicious as they are). If you figure out how to profitably get wires to people's houses, you solve the ISP's problems. If your building was on a street that already had open access tunnels, then we could serve you. My experience was the same at a NYC-based ISP. When they ran out of easy install opportunities, expansion stopped. Google Fiber got a good deal in its partner cities to run the fiber next to existing power lines (which not every city has, they're all underground here). My experience from working at fiber ISPs is that the infrastructure is the hard part. People that want to use the Internet don't have enough money to do that, and that's why the business is tough. Think about how much money it costs to dig up a street and put cables under it, and then run them into each house along that street. There is the cartel effect going on (lobbying against municipal broadband), but even in the absence of that, it's still tough to be an ISP. Forget about the difficulties of generation-long projects, this makes anything longer than 4 years highly uncertain. It was approve & construction begun on one administration, a final portion for it put on hold by another, then opened again by a third, a fourth stopped it again resulting in its backers cancelling it (seemingly) once and for all. Whether you're for or against it, the Keystone pipeline is a prime example of the insanity that results from this. On the other hand it means that very important pieces of public policy are even further removed from election accountability and subject to the whims of different administrations. Technically this allows agencies to be more nimble, or as much as possible in any lumbering bureaucracy. That's the double edged sword in the US of having executive level departments with wide latitude to set regulations with the weight of law behind them but not the same high barrier of changing them as it takes to change a law. (And that's before we even get into the issue of the public comment ballot box getting stuffed by copypasta spam in favor of killing net neutrality and wink-and-nudge blind eye turned away from it.) ![]() Then we got an FCC chair who not only took it away, but actively trolled people who were angry about it. In the US we had it for a brief period of time. I think you've either found a technical bug or a, uh, "the speedtest is good so my internet must be fine" "bug" (which would be very interesting). aaaand remember that it's persistent (for just the tab) until you turn it back off :) lol)Įdit: Just found downthread describing seeing 100Mbps through a 10Mbit hub. Now I'm curious what model PHY (well, NIC) you're using.įWIW, Chrome's devtools has a network rate limiter built in (network tab, dropdown that says "No throttling", open that and hit "add". I think speedtest websites try to measure both the burst rate and the line rate, so perhaps something's gotten very tangled up on both the PHY and JS sides. Remembering that experience got me thinking - without any idea what I'm talking about, I'm wondering if the PHY layer is doing something vaguely similarly stupid-simple that does technically limit the line rate to 10Mb at full blast, but still allows throughput to very briefly burst higher than that. (I'm still looking for a way to synthetically limit a link in ways that are physically accurate.) IIRC I was just playing with the default approaches you'd find bandied about on tutorial websites and such. While stumbling around attempting to figure out `tc qdisc` a while back I found that the shaping it was applying was very synthetic, such that asking for low bitrate and high latency would mean the kernel would just wait a second or two then shunt several KB of data through at once. You mean you told the PHY to renegotiate at 10M with something like `ethtool -s speed 10`? ![]() In 1952 it was re-built completely by a new owner. Originally opened in 1887 as part of the Saugus Train Station under the name Saugus Eating House, it took its present name, The Saugus Cafe, in 1899. Flickr. ![]() I have also been working hard at photographing everything on this list. All descriptions here started out as exactly 2 sentences each and I’ve been adding more specific histories, but it takes research and time. Currently I’ve edited this list over 757 times. I am constantly adding new restaurants I discover, updating the ones that have closed and expanding the descriptions below, so check back often for new updated information. In the four years since I published this list, it has received a million reads! That shows me how much people care about our vintage restaurants. The first two of my map series breaking down restaurants by type, location and description can be found here: The Oldest Surviving Mexican Restaurants in Los Angeles and That’s Amore- The Oldest Surviving Italian Restaurants and Delis in Los AngelesMore in this map series to follow soon. I’m hoping these will indeed reopen, but they have been moved to the bottom of the list until then. There are also a few restaurants still listed as “temporarily” closed: La Golondrina (1926), Walker’s Cafe (1946), Lucy’s El Adobe Cafe (1964), Marix Tex-Mex (1983), Newcomb’s Ranch (1939), Andre’s Pizza (1963), Maxwell’s Cafe (1972). Unfortunately the losses keep adding up, the most recent being Rod’s Grill (1957), Leo’s Mexican Food (1976), The Spot, (1977), Watson’s Soda Fountain (1915), Mexi-Casa (1965), Shibucho (1976), 94th Aero Squadron (1973), Raul’s Mexican Food (1978), and Izzy’s Deli (1973). NOTE February 2023: During the covid crisis we lost an additional 22 area vintage restaurants. These closures are found at the bottom of the list. Cheers, my dears, and bon appetit! Love, Nikkiįrom May 2015 to February 2023 we have lost 95 restaurants on this list due to closure. As of February 2023 the list is at 483 places, spread as far south as the bottom of Orange County, east to San Bernardino and north to Santa Clarita. ![]() I do my best to keep this list continually updated and add, subtract and make changes as needed. I’ve added a Yelp link for each restaurant, so you can check out hours and customer reviews of the food. The list includes all of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, but also the Inland Empire in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. You will find classic steakhouses, Googie diners, pastrami delicatessens, walk-up hamburger stands and more. My criteria for the restaurants here is that they are at least 37 years old (1985) or older, although I have made a few exceptions, and that they are within about an hour’s drive from downtown L.A. I’m sure there are many holes in my research and would appreciate additions, updates and corrections in the comments section below. After a lot of detective work I’ve compiled this “Master List” and plan to update it regularly. I often search the internet for authentic old-school spots in neighborhoods I visit and finding them is not always easy. I pray that old places don’t renovate their mid-century or even mid-’70s decor. I’m a junkie for vintage architecture and old signs. I’m not as selective about a menu as I am about the ambiance, atmosphere and what I am experiencing. I’m a sucker for a joint with history, charm, character and stories. We are lucky in Los Angeles to have a lot of spectacular vintage restaurants, but we are still losing many every year to owners who retire, sell out for money or lose their long-held lease to nasty gentrification. (the parts are under $40, it's almlost pure labor)Ĭame across this great thread after experiencing the same blackscreen problem on my PB G4 1Ghz running 10.4.11. If you take it into a local apple reseller with a portable certified tech, you'll be looking around $250 or so. If you have it sent in for depot repair, you will be looking to spend at least $400 as this would be considered a tier 1 repair. I'd advise checking with apple on this before making any decisions. I'm going to assume you are no longer under warranty. It'll save time, aggrivation and risk of damaging anything when working on the computer. You may be better off having your local Apple reseller/service dept handle this repair. I'm a portable tech who has worked on just about every portable that Apple has ever made (save for the kanga g3) and I would say that the 12" PowerBook G4 is a machine that even the most seasoned of techs are wary of working on. If there is video - you've got a bum inverter cable.Īnother thing to bear in mind. If there is no video on your lcd when this occurs - you've got a bad reed switch. I would venture a guess that your reed switch is bad as the computer could be thinking that it's in clamshell mode and turning off the display. On the older iBook G4's, the reed switch and inverter cable were one piece - when it failed (which was a when not an if) the computer would do weird things - similar symptoms to what you are describing. On the 12" PowerBook G4's and final rev of the iBook G4, the reed switch and inverter cable are two separate parts. If it still has warranty, and it continues to do it, call apple and let them know, it might be a hardware problem (most likely not, Apple just would rather replace mine that have me send it in for the 15th time)Ī potential cause for your problem is a bad reed switch and/or inverter cable. It might be that the power manager did not fully reset itself if the LCD Backlight goes off again in the future. If you have time, and can wait, let the system sit for 24hrs w/o power whatsoever. I would say if it looks like it's still doing, what you do, is unplug the machine, pull the battery (save your data first before shutdown!) and press the CUDA switch (probably under the keyboard if it has one or something) and reset it is fully. ![]() Sadly, i never found out what the solution was on my old iBook before I sent it in to get it replaced by my current G4 iBook (i had the 900Mhz G3, They gave me a 1.2Ghz iBook after my G3 went in 14x ) anyways, it sounds like the power manager is having problems. The power manager controls sleep as well as the brightness of the display. ![]() So far it's not doing it but I am worried that it's a backlight issue or something else? I have heard of random sleeping problems with the powerbooks, but mine doesn't actually go to sleep. I closed the lid and then it went to sleep and then I opened it and switched the battery settings to the above, and it was fine. When I unplugged it it did the same thing. That worked as long as its plugged into the AC adapter. I switched the power settings to "never" for sleep and like 5 minutes for display sleep. I can still see that the screen is on, but the display is dark. ![]() ![]() What I've been doing is putting the computer to sleep by closing the lid, letting it rest for a few seconds and turning it back on by opening it. I have a 12" Powerbook G4 1.5" and lately the screen randomly turns itself off, the whole thing goes black, like it was asleep or off, but the computer keeps running just fine. ![]() To use any of these abilities you have to click on the fairy in the top right side of the scene.
